Welcome to JPH Photography!

JPH Photography is  photography by me,  James Paul Hildebrandt.

I am based out of Saskatoon Saskatchewan and have been behind the lens since approx 2001. Over this time I’ve experimented with many different photographic disciplines but have found my passion to lie mainly in portraiture and landscape photography.

Starting in 2008 I began to focus on lighting and learning how to utilize  this amazing tool for use in my portrait work, no longer would I be a slave to the fickle sun and its unpredictability.  Thanks to amazing sites like strobist there was a wealth of knowledge out there and I poured over this material feverishly.  As I learned more about lighting I realized to be a good photographer you must have a solid understanding of light, its relationship with the subject and how the camera sees light.  The master painters of the renaissance understood this and applied it to painting, naturally it would follow that it too applies to photography.

“Light makes photography. Embrace light. Admire it. Love it. But above all, know light. Know it for all you are worth, and you will know the key to photography.”

-George Eastman founder of Eastman Kodak.

I still have a passion for landscape photography and yearn to travel more and freeze the beauty as I go.  Don’t get me wrong, my prairie backyard is pretty cool but its nice to get away too. A few recent trips have been the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, Halifax Novi Scotia here in Canada,  and the amazing glimpse of China.
